Snowdonia - Fourteen Peak Challenge *Update* - 25/06/2008

Just to update all concerned, the fund raising has gone extremely well and we hope to the Bryan Davies Appeal fund.
The day started off with leaving home at 11.00 pm on Friday 20th, Rhys and I then met up with Edward, Gary and Gryff in Llanberris.
We started the ascent of Crib Goch at around 1.00 am with head lamps and some very dodgy jokes.
This was all very nice until we started climbing, we did stop for a couple of minutes where we thought that we would wait until it went light, but the anticipation was too much for Gryff “the mountain goat” and so we were off again.
Climbing and climbing until we reached the top. At which point Edward said “lucky we did that in the dark, you would not like to have seen where you have just been” Great.
Then we had a short rest as again we thought it might be best to tackle the Crib in the light. But the mountain goat started itching again and head lights on we were off.
We went over Garnedd Ugain which was also a little dodgy and then we were at the top of Snowdon before we knew it. But there was no time for admiring the fantastic sun set we were off.
Down some well dodgy route for about an hour to the bottom and then before setting off up Elidir Fawr the wet weather gear was adorned. And it was up and up in horrendous weather conditions 80 mph winds and driving rain. It was at the top of this mountain that I think dehydration had set in with me as I obviously was not taking on enough fluid. This meant I was nauseous and unable to take on fuel.
And so it was with deep disappointment that I had to pull out of the challenge at the next mountain Y Garn. Garry was also suffering with a pulled muscle and so we both made our way down.
Rhys, Edward and the Goat carried on still in desperate conditions up Glyder Fawr, Glyder Fach and then Trefan. All these mountains had severe pulls on the way up and also some very difficult descents that were made all the more dangerous due to the conditions.
They had a welcome stop at lake Ogwen for some much needed food and some dry socks before starting the log hard slog up Pen Yr Ole Wen and the Carnedd section. At this point the tracks on the way up had turned to rivers and the dry socks were no more.
There was another 6 peaks to do before the finish which in these conditions was a greater test for the minds and bodies. As Edward and the Goat said normally at this time of year there are many people doing this route but on this day there were none to be seen, as they had some sense.
At the final mountain they had completed it in 14 hours 20 minutes. This is a very god time. And it does not take into account the 2 hours to get to the start or the 6 miles down hill to get to the pick up point. Even the Goat was struggling at this point.
Edward later spoke with the park warden and he said these three were the only three to complete the challenge this weekend. And that is some achievement.
Thank you for your support I know it will be much appreciated.
Snowdonia - Fourteen Peak Challenge - 21/06/2008
Bryan 'Yogi' Davies broke his neck in his last ever game of rugby for his club Bala RFC and is now a Quadriplegic.
At the age of 49 and with 21 years of rugby under his belt Yogi announced in the dressing room prior to his final game of the 2006 - 2007 season that he was wearing the red and blue hooped jersey for the last time. He was promptly and rightly made Captain for the day and led his team out of the dressing room for the last time.
Very early in the game fate took over, the first scrummage collapsed and Yogi lay prostrate on the ground. Those few seconds changed his life and that of his wife Sue and young children Ilan and Teleri for ever. The rest is history suffice to say that present prognosis indicate that Yogi will be paralysed and disabled with a broken neck for the rest of his days.
Next Saturday, the 21st of June we will be attempting the Snowdonia 14 Peak Challenge, a 27 mile hike over each peak in the Snowdonia range which we aim to complete in less than fourteen hours.
Fourteen months on Yogi is still currently receiving 24 hour care at Walton Hospital until sufficient funds are available to build a purpose built house for him and his family in his home town of Bala.
Any donations towards this worthy cause will be extremely appreciated and will go some way to assists Yogi and his family get some form of normality back into their lives.
